Kenyan court throws out president's win, calls for new vote

The country's IEBC declared Kenyatta the victor with 54.27 percent of the vote, while Odinga, the leader of Kenyan opposition National Super Alliance (NASA) received 44.7 percent.

Kenyatta who earlier agreed to respect the ruling of the court however made a significant turnaround at a rally in Nairobi where he lambasted judges of the Apex Court.

Odinga alleged that the electoral management system was hacked and manipulated to inflate results in favor of Uhuru.

In court, Odinga's lawyers said the irregularities affected five million votes.

"We have no faith at all in the electoral commission", Odinga said on Friday after the Supreme Court decision.

"Those commissioners must go". Majority actually belong in jail and therefore we are going to ask prosecution for all the electoral commission officials who have committed this monstrous crime against the people of Kenya.

Kenya is the first African country to have a presidential poll invalidated by a court. It sets a precedent that peace can prevail through legal means following a contentious election. He said he accepted the ruling even though he disagreed with it. According to Kenya's Nation newspaper, the Nasa candidate who is 72 this year had earlier promised his opposition co-principals that it was the last time he was running for State House after previous three barren attempts.

We wait for the election date to be announced, and the next court case to be highly watched will the case against the IEBC officials involved in the vote tampering.

The post Kenya Supreme Court declares presidential election results invalid appeared first on PBS NewsHour. "Let us be people of peace", he said in a speech.

"The commission urged all Kenyans to remain calm and restrain themselves from any political rhetoric that may undermine the stability and cohesion of our country".

The lead counsel for the president, Ahmednassir Abdulahi, told the court that the nullification was a "very political decision" but said they will live with the consequences.

He said the verdict was backed by four of the six Supreme Court judges.

Residents in the western city of Kisumu, where Mr Odinga has strong backing, celebrated in the streets. Some forms lacked serial numbers or water marks or were not signed by election agents or lacked the electoral commission stamp.
