Mamata expresses concern over plight of Rohingya Muslims

Minister of State for Home, Kiren Rijiju said this month that the Rohingya living in India have to be "pushed back".

Rohingya Musims who fled persecution in Myanmar can not stay in India as they are a threat to national security, the Government of India told the Supreme Court on Thursday.

A crackdown by Myanmar's Army, launched in response to attacks by Rohingya militants on August 25, has pushed vast numbers of refugees from the stateless Muslim minority across the border.

In a bluntly worded affidavit submitted in Supreme Court, the government on Thursday has made it clear that it is against staying of Rohingya Muslims as illegal refugees in India. The flight of almost 3,00,000 Rohingya to neighbouring Bangladesh is a testimony to the wretchedness of their condition.

The Centre also said that it was found that there were organised network of agents and touts facilitating illegal migration of Rohingyas in India. They have links with terror groups and are likely to be used by the Islamic State, the Central government told the Supreme Court on Thursday. "Times like these offer the best gauge of whether India is truly ready to become a recognized regional power, and will influence issues such as garnering support for India's bid to join the United Nations Security Council", he said.

The United Nations had appealed to the entire worldwide community to keep the political differences aside and support the ongoing humanitarian efforts to help Rohingya Muslim refugees.

His remarks came after India had taken strong exception to UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein's criticism of India for wanting to deport Rohingya refugees.

The government's draft affidavit says there is no "violation of fundamental rights of the petitioner" in this case. The government claimed these groups to be operating in Jammu, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Mewat in north India.

Violent attacks allegedly by Myanmarese armymen have led to an exodus of Rohingya tribals from the western Rakhine state in that country to India and Bangladesh.

India now has about 40,000 Rohingyas who have escaped in recent years from the rising violence against them in Myanmar and entered the country through the North East border.

The affidavit adds, 'There is also a serious potential and possibility of eruption of violence against Myanmar government/its diplomatic missions and also against Buddhists who are Indian citizen who stay on Indian soil by the radicalised Rohingya'. Detection and deportation of such illegal immigrants from Myanmar's violence-hit Rakhine state is a continuous process, the Centre said.
