Ryanair CEO vows damaging cancellation "mess" will not happen again

GETTY
COMPENSATION Here's how to get money if your flight is cancelled

By cancelling less than 2% of our flying programme over the next six weeks, (until our winter schedule starts in early November) we can improve the operational resilience of our schedules and restore punctuality to our annualised target of 90%.

Ryanair, Europe's biggest airline by passenger numbers, canceled the flights because it had "messed up in the planning of pilot holidays".

Mr O'Leary said: "We're working very hard at the moment to make sure we finalise the list of flight cancellations, which will affect less than 2% of our customers, and also look after those customers who are disrupted".

He went on: "We expect all airlines to fulfil their obligations to their customers and do everything possible to notify them well in advance of any disruption to their journey".

Ryanair must offer you comparable transport to your final destination if no alternative flight with the carrier is available.

Initially, Ryanair was only making available lists of cancelled flights up to this Wednesday, 20 September.

Ryanair operates flights from Paphos and Larnaca.

It is believed that up to 9,000 passengers a day could be affected by the cancellations, with the airline admitting that it had "messed up" the planning of pilot holidays.

A list of cancelled flights up until Wednesday can be found here.

Ryanair said on Friday it would cut 2% of scheduled flights until October 31, but initially only released details of flights that were to be cancelled over the weekend.

"We try to explain why we've made the mess and we will pay compensation to those passengers who are entitled to compensation, which will be those flights that are cancelled over the next two weeks".

You should get your money back within seven days or given an alternative flight. Some Dublin flights were also dropped. Airlines are pretty stingy at paying for non-refundable hotels and accommodation, so your travel insurance is more likely to pay out and help advise you in other ways. Be sure to document what you spend, though and keep receipts. "This is when having a decent policy can really come in handy". This applies to spends of between £100 and £30,000.

Analysts said Ryanair's scheduling problems stemmed from having to harmonize Irish rules with European Union rules on how many hours pilots can fly in a certain period of time.

As the requests for information kept coming, the airline later tweeted: "Hi, between today and tomorrow all flights cancellations up and until OCT31 will be communicated". Change your flight to a different one on their website here.
