Suspect dies in Huntington Beach officer-involved shooting captured on video

Police investigate an officer's shooting of a man at a Huntington Beach 7 Eleven on Sept. 22 2017

Police say a man is dead after he was shot by a police officer outside of a 7-Eleven in Huntington Beach, Calif.

The officer had been speaking with the man outside the convenience store before the confrontation suddenly turned violent, said Officer Angela Bennett, a police spokeswoman.

The man was hospitalized but could not survive, police said. His identity has not been released.

It shows the officer struggling with the man on the ground in the parking lot.

A bystander captured the shooting on video.

Although details about what prompted the confrontation remained sketchy, Huntington Beach Police Chief Robert Handy said the video showed the officer was forced to defend himself.

It was not immediately clear if the officer fired live ammunition or nonlethal rounds.

As soon as the officer realizes that the man has grabbed something from his belt, he pushes him away by the back of his neck and backs away, unholstering his pistol. Both witnesses - neither of whom wanted to be identified - said the officer approached the man, who then swung a punch toward the officer. When asked about this, Bennett repeatedly responded that the shooting was "an OIS".

Sound of up to seven gunshots can be heard, before the man collapses on the ground.

Marina High School, which is just across the street from the scene of the shooting, was placed on lockdown in response to the incident.

The man, who has not been distinguished, was taken to a healing facility, Bennett said. The lockdown was lifted at about 11:15 a.m.

"That was actually basically seeing a person die".
