Tesla partners with AMD/GloFo for self driving vehicle AI processor

Elon Musk

On Wednesday Sanjay Jha, CEO of AMD spin-off GlobalFoundries, said at the company's technology conference in Santa Clara, California, that the company is working directly with Tesla.

A more power-efficient purpose-built chip could help Tesla get closer to delivering totally autonomous driving. According to a new report, Tesla is now developing its own chips for self-driving cars.

Furthermore, Tesla has already receivedback samples of the first implementation of its processor and is now running tests on it, a source told CNBC.

Tesla has made no secret of the fact that it wants to put fully autonomous cars on roads in the next few years.

Tesla, AMD, and GlobalFoundries did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

In a move to bolster its own self-driving technology ambitions, Intel acquired MobileEye for $15.3 billion back in March this year.

AMD may have just received a major shot in the arm, in terms of exposure if not revenue, with the as-yet unconfirmed news that the company is working with electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla to produce a semi-custom processor for autonomous vehicle functionality.

Heading Tesla's silicon project is Jim Keller, a veteran chip architect who has previously worked at both Apple and AMD.

Under Keller's leadership there are over 50 people - several of which are AMD veterans - including director Ganesh Venkataramanan, principal hardware engineer Bill McGee, and system circuit design lead Dan Bailey.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said it has been a "tough slog" transitioning from the reliance on Mobileye's vision chips.

While neither company has commented on the matter, the news saw AMD's share price end the day up 5 percent and continue to climb after hours.
