Donald Trump Says NFL Should Have Suspended Colin Kaepernick for Not Standing

OPINION: Athletes taking knees are exercising their freedom of speech

The president has been vocal about his belief that the NFL should discipline players who do not stand during the national anthem, even telling his supporters to boycott the games if players continue to kneel.

President Trump wished it didn't get that far. The national anthem and the flag are symbols of this country and how it had to fight for rights that should not be taken for granted.

Running start student and military dependant Julian Doyle, who is studying seismology said, "The NFL players claim the context of their protests behind the BLM movement and equality, but they don't understand the context of the National Anthem".

Trump added: "You cannot disrespect our country, our flag our anthem, you cannot do that". It would have thrown more fuel on the fire and had the exact opposite effect of what Trump imagines. Basketball player Frank Banks, who is studying kinesiology have to said, "I understand the motivation behind their protests and how they don't tolerate police brutality and the racial problems in America". However, there is nothing in the NFL guidelines that prohibits protesting during the national anthem.

The NFL does not have a policy prohibiting players from kneeling or sitting during pregame renditions of "The Star-Spangled Banner". "You could at least stand up, people died [for the flag]". "It says the players should stand".

"I am not going to strand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color", said Kaepernick. As the season went on, more players joined him and voiced their opinions, but by the end of the season, Kaeprnick found himself out of a job.

It is without Kaepernick's physical presence, just with the vestiges of what he started a year ago, that the first month of the football season has become a polarizing setting entangled in the country's ongoing cultural tug-of-war.

"The National Anthem must be played prior to every NFL game, and all players must be on the sideline for the National Anthem", according to the league's gameday operations manual. Period. I don't want a misguided political attitude from athletes in the National Football League, or in any other sport.

Trump tried to purchase the Buffalo Bills in 2014 but, as Loggins put it in the clip retweeted by Kaepernick, "those same billionaires that he calls his friends voted not to let him into their club". If that happened, according to Trump, "you would never of had a problem".
