Facebook Comes Clean About Russian Ads

Facebook also said it would begin to require more thorough documentation from people who want to run ads about US federal elections, demanding that they confirm their businesses or organizations. According to Schrage, the company is still looking for "abuse and bad actors" on its platform.

This, Schrage wrote, is due to the fact that most of the ads appear to focus on divisive social and political messages across the ideological spectrum, touching on topics from LGBT matters to race issues to immigration to gun rights.

Now, to increase transparency and accountability of advertisers, Facebook will also be showing what other ads are run by the page - immaterial of whether you figure in the advertiser's target audience or not.

As for cost, Facebook finds that less than $3 was spent to buy 50% of the ads in question, while less than $1,000 was spent to buy almost all of them.

The Senate Intelligence Committee has also called on representatives from Facebook, Twitter and Alphabet, the Google parent company, to testify in a public hearing on November 1.

"We are sharing these ads with Congress because we want to do our part to help investigators gain a deeper understanding of Russian interference in the United States political system and explain those activities to the public", said Joel Kaplan, VP Global Public Policy, Facebook.

The company made the announcement after turning over 3,000 ads to congressional investigators examining Russian interference in the USA election.

" Our ad targeting is created to show people ads they might find useful, instead of showing everyone ads that they might find irrelevant or annoying", he explained.

Since its disclosure, Facebook has faced questions and calls for increased US regulation from USA authorities.

A spokesperson for the company said its internal investigation is not finished.

The social network is hiring 1,000 more people for its global ads review teams in the space of the next year, and is "investing more" in machine learning to help with automated flagging for ads.

Facebook is not planning to release the ads to the public, and will not commit to sharing publicly greater details about the content of the ads and who they reached.

Mr Zuckerberg initially said it was "crazy" to think that misinformation spread on Facebook influenced the outcome of the election, but he has now changed that view.

Warner criticized Twitter for not sharing more information with Congress, saying the company's findings were merely "derivative" of Facebook's work.

Twitter said last week that it had suspended 22 accounts corresponding to the 450 Facebook accounts that were likely operated out of Russian Federation.
