Black Friday Online Shopping Sales Hit Highest Mark Ever

Record online sales were seen on Black Friday and Thanksgiving, when shoppers bagged deep discounts and bought more on their mobile devices, brightening the overall outlook for those traditional retailers that have expanded beyond brick-and-mortar outlets. Retailers brought in some $7.9 billion in online sales on Thanksgiving and Black Friday, up nearly 18 percent from a year ago, according to Adobe Analytics' review of transactions at the largest 100 US web retailers.

"We know that opening on Thanksgiving Day was merely pulling shopping visits from Black Friday, as opposed to creating an additional opportunity for shoppers to hit the stores", Field said about that strategy.

According to Adobe, as reported by Reuters, TVs, laptops, toys and the PlayStation 4 were the top sellers during the usa sales. That's a almost 18 percent increase from past year, according to Adobe Analytics. There was little sign of the wild shopper frenzy customary of Black Fridays from last years.

However, retail research firm ShopperTrak said store traffic fell less than 1 percent on Black Friday, bucking industry predictions of a sharper decline.

Although a large portion of sales over the last four days were completed via a smart phone or computer, Americans spent just about $1 million per minute on Black Friday, according to e-commerce platform Shopify. The modest drop, amid a big upswing in online sales, "illustrates that physical retail is still highly relevant and, when done right, profitable", a Shoppertrak spokesperson told CNBC. In fact, a survey from the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics found that 46 percent of shoppers ages 18 to 24 plan on spending more on holiday gifts this year than they did last year.
