Fleetwood wins Race to Dubai after Rose wilts

Shane Lowry reacts to his third shot on the 18th hole yesterday

Tommy Fleetwood is grateful to remain in contention for the Race to Dubai crown going into the final round of the European Tour season after finding himself "a bit lost" past year.

Running on fumes as he plays his eighth event in nine weeks, Lowry had to rely on his magical short game to save pars early on the back nine before three birdies in his last four holes allowed him to sign for a 70 he felt was "one of the best two-unders I've ever shot".

With Fleetwood struggling to make birdies and finishing way behind in joint 21st place on 11 under 277, Rose needed to finish in sole possession of fourth to win his second Order of Merit title.

Current Race to Dubai leader Tommy Fleetwood overcame a slow start to match Rose's score and he lurks just two behind alongside Dean Burmester and Kiradech Aphibarnrat.

He signed off with a 63 to finish up on 18 par and tied for second, one shot behind the victor, Jon Rahm.

Fleetwood has recovered bravely from an opening 73 with consecutive rounds of 65 and yesterday's effort included eight birdies in his last 11 holes. He made a bogey there, before finding the water with his second shot on the par-5 14th and missing a two-foot par putt on the 16th.

"If I slip up tomorrow, he's (Fleetwood) right there". I think this year has been a big year in terms of my career. "It's very special", said Fleetwood. "It shows sort of the level of consistency and the amount I've improved as a player and as a person".

Yet there was to be no miracle finish for Rose, with Fleetwood instead topping the standings.

"I made bad decisions, hit lazy shots and I think I was really exhausted out there and need to go back and have a rest and get out there tomorrow". I had opportunities around 10 and 11 and didn't take those. "The shots on 13 and 14 were the undoing", he said. "It's good for him to finish it off".

"I was a little anxious before teeing off".

"This is what you practise for and this is what you play for, but having my seven-week old baby here will do a good job of keeping my mind off it". I really wanted to win.
