Libya's detention of migrants outrage to humanity

Migrants arrive at a naval base after they were rescued by Libyan coastal guards in Tripoli

Stranded Nigerians and migrants of other nationals in Libya are in a dire situation as smugglers now auction them for sale as slaves in the North African country for as low as $200-$400 (N65,000- N144,000).

A report by CNN revealed disturbing images of people sold in an auction in Libya.

The video shows two people sold within a few minutes for a thousand and two hundred Libyan dinars, less than three hundred dollars, and this is taking place in a natural atmosphere as if the people of this region are accustomed to this bad sight.

They are set to discuss how to improve conditions in Libya's detention centres and to build up asylum systems in other African countries.

Footage in the form of grainy cell phone video obtained by the news outlet shows a Nigerian man who appears to be in his 20s being sold.

Libya has become a major transit hub for migrants looking to reach Europe from North Africa.

The EU has launched a string of schemes to tackle the biggest influx of refugees and migrants since World War II, caused initially by people fleeing the conflict in Syria, but now mainly down to economic migrants from Africa.

Five migrants have died as a German nonprofit organization, Sea-Watch, and the Libyan coast guard tried to rescue them from their foundering boat in the Mediterranean, with each side blaming the other for the mishap.

But a recent clampdown by the Libyan coastguard means fewer boats are making it out to sea, leaving the smugglers with a backlog of would-be passengers on their hands.

At Slave Auctions, Libya Smugglers Are Selling Off Migrants for as Little as $400

And according to investigators, the smugglers become masters and the migrants and refugees become slaves. The auctions usually take place in nine locations, namely: Gadamis, Garyan, Zuwara, Alzintan, Sabratah, Kabaw, Calsteverde, Alzintan and Alrujban.

Carrying concealed cameras into a property outside the capital of Tripoli last month, we witness a dozen people go "under the hammer" in the space of six or seven minutes. "I haven't seen a doctor yet", she said.

"If you look at most of the people here, if you check your bodies, you see the marks".

This didn't happen, and after being forced to work for weeks, Victory was told the money he'd been bought for wasn't enough.

Eventually, he was returned to his smugglers, according to CNN, and his family had to come up with a ransom for him.

While many of his friends from Nigeria have made it to Europe, Victory is resigned to returning home empty-handed.

"I could not make it (to Europe), but I thank God for the life of those that make it".

"I'm not happy", he adds. I'm not happy. I go back and start back from square one. "It's very painful. Very painful".
