Shots fired reported at Oxford Circus tube station in London

Oxford Street in London

Reuters have reported that London's Oxford Circus underground station is being evacuated and that armed police are on the scene.

But around 90 minutes after responding, police said there was no evidence of any shots, casualties or suspects.

Armed police raced to Oxford Circus Tube station and Oxford Street after receiving 999 calls reporting that shots had been fired.

"A full and methodical search of the station and Oxford Street was conducted by officers". Shortly afterwards the Metropolitan Police also took similar calls. "During the station evacuation, one woman is believed to have sustained a minor injury".

The incident happened as throngs of shoppers flocked to the area for Black Friday retail sales.

Sky News reported Bond Street and Oxford Circus tube stations were close but have since been reopened. "The station is now closed, please avoid the area at this time". People are screaming and running trying to escape the area.

"The store we were in was locked down, the manager wouldn't let us leave - they said there had been a shooting at the entrance of the Tube station", Woodward said.

The specifics of the incident in question remain unclear.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
