Sisi calls emergency meeting after more than 80 killed at Sinai mosque

Egypt Sinai: Bomb and gun attack on mosque

The BBC reported Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi will meet with security forces Friday.

"I am deeply saddened by the cowardly terrorist act that targeted a mosque, in northern Sinai, and resulting deaths and injuries, the Crown Prince said".

President Donald Trump called it a "horrible and cowardly terrorist attack on innocent and defenseless" worshippers in Egypt and said terrorism and its ideology must be defeated.

Officials said militants in four off-road vehicles bombed the mosque and then sprayed worshipers with gunfire.

The attack was unusual in several ways for Egypt, said Kamran Bokhari, senior analyst at George Washington University's Program on Extremism: the high casualty toll, targeting a mosque and its level of sophistication.

Authorities replaced the military's chief of staff and nearly a dozen top police officials after at least 16 police conscripts and officers were killed in an ambush southwest of Cairo last month.

It comes weeks after a major militant attack on Egyptian soldiers in Sinai.

Will be calling the President of Egypt in a short while to discuss the tragic terrorist attack, with so much loss of life.

The Ministry of Health earlier confirmed that 75 were injured in the attack, adding that the injured were transported to Bir al-Abed hospital in North Sinai.

Prime Minister of Georgia, Giorgi Kvirikashvili: "Our most honest condolences to the families of victims, the Government and the people of Egypt and everyone affected by the heinous attack on the mosque in Sinai". The attackers also fired upon the ambulances, eye witnesses claimed. Islamic militants, including the local affiliate of the Islamic State group, consider Sufis heretics due to their less literal interpretations of the faith.

The White House also said in a statement that "the global community must continue to strengthen its efforts to defeat terrorist groups that threaten the United States and our partners and we must collectively discredit the extremist ideology that forms the basis of their existence".

Sisi, a former armed forces commander who presents himself as a bulwark against Islamist militancy, convened an emergency meeting with his defence and interior ministers and intelligence chief soon after the attack. Officials say about 130 others were also hurt.

Appalled by the sickening attack on a mosque in North Sinai.

Militants have mostly targeted security forces in their attacks, but have also tried to expand beyond the peninsula by hitting Egyptian Christian churches and pilgrims.
