Weight Loss: How cinnamon (Dalchini) can help you lose weight

In a study published in the December 2017 issue of the journal Metabolism, Jun Wu, of the Life Sciences Institute at the University of MI, and colleagues looked into the effect of cinnamaldehyde on fat cells of mice and humans.

Cinnamon could be a fat burning spice according to scientists from the University of MI.

The researchers caution that more research is needed to figure out the ideal way to use cinnamaldehyde to trigger thermogenesis without causing any side effects.

But, don't count on a Cinnabon diet in the near future!

"Scientists were finding that this compound affected metabolism", said Wu, who also is an assistant professor of molecular and integrative physiology at the U-M Medical School. Moreover, they also noted increased production of proteins Ucp1 and Fgf21, which are important metabolic regulators and are involved in thermogenesis.

The researchers found that exposure to cinnamon oil triggered the mouse and human cells to burn energy through the process of thermogenesis, which burns calories to generate heat and keep the body warm.

Wu and colleagues set out to examine the effect of cinnamaldehyde on human fat cells.

Jun Wu said in a statement given to Michigan News that, "It's only been relatively recently that energy surplus has become a problem". This was extremely useful to our ancestors, who didn't have reliable access to food. "Throughout evolution, the opposite-energy deficiency-has been the problem".

"So if it can help protect against obesity, too, it may offer an approach to metabolic health that is easier for patients to adhere to", Wu said. "The three main purposes of metabolism are the conversion of food/fuel to energy to run cellular processes, the conversion of food/fuel to building blocks for proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, and some carbohydrates, and the elimination of nitrogenous wastes".

Cinnamon has a long history of use in traditional medicine and is a peculiar ingredient of person's diet.

However, with the rising obesity epidemic, researchers have been looking for ways to prompt fat cells to activate thermogenesis, turning those fat-burning processes back on.

Wu believes that cinnamaldehyde could mark a big step forward in controlling our metabolism and therefore better getting a handle on our weight. There are several other metabolic benefits offered by cinnamon to the body. However, as part of a balanced lifestyle, cinnamon might also help. Australian researchers found cinnamon will help lower the stomach temperature - which aids digestion - up to two degrees.

In 2010, a study found a cinnamon-water solution contains antioxidants that can cut the chances of getting obesity or diabetes by up to 23 percent. Scientists said in 2014 that the spice is the source of a chemical that can protect the brain.
