Army Major, 3 Jawans Killed After Pakistan Violates Ceasefire In J&k

The statement said that the dead include an Indian army officer and that Indian soldiers retaliated "strongly and effectively".

Three Indian soldiers were killed in Kashmir along the unofficial border with Pakistan Saturday, Indian police said, in the latest skirmish between the bitter rivals in the disputed Himalayan territory.

Five soldiers including a Major suffered injuries and evacuated to military hospital.

Two soldiers were seriously wounded in the firing from across the LOC. Two other personnel also sustained injuries and are under medical treatment.

Major Moharkar Prafulla Ambadas aged 32 years, belonged to District Bhandara, Maharashtra and is survived by his wife Smt Avoli Moharkar.

Lance Naik Gurmail, 34, belonged to District Amritsar in Punjab and is survived by his wife Kuljit Kaur and a daughter while sepoy Pargat, 30, belonged to District Karnal, Haryana and is survived by his wife and a son, the spokesperson added.

While maintaining that the Army will continue its efforts to ensure peace and tranquillity on the borders, Lt Gen Bhatt said it will "continue to take all retaliatory measures and retain the right to punitively respond to any provocative acts of aggression from the Pakistani side".

According to Indian officials, over 600 incidents of cease-fire violations were recorded along the LoC and the International Border (IB) since the beginning of this year.

India shares a 3,323 km long border with Pakistan, of which 221 km of the IB and 740 km of the LoC fall in Jammu and Kashmir.

The violence was sparked by the killing of a popular young rebel leader by government forces in July previous year.

Defence sources, however, said four Army personnel were killed in the "unprovoked" firing. There were 152 ceasefire violations in 2015 and 153 in 2014 on the LoC.

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and Deputy CM Nirmal Singh both paid rich tributes to the martyrs and conveyed their heartfelt sympathies to the families.
