Bullied 10-year-old girl hangs herself

Ashawnty Davis

Ashwanty Davis was a fifth-grader at Sunrise Elementary School in Aurora, CA.

After the clip was posted to Musical.ly, Ashawnty was subjected to frequent teasing and bullying at school, according to her parents. However, her parents said everything changed when she was involved in a fight after school. A fight ensued and someone recorded the altercation.

'We were made aware of that video when a media outlet approached us with it.

Mental health and counseling services were offered at Ashawnty's school for students or teachers who needed help processing her death, officials said.

Ashawnty's mother, Latoshia Harris, claimed that the other girl was bullying her daughter and when the 10-year-old confronted her, it led to a fight.

The bullying only intensified, and Harris said, "My daughter came home two weeks later and hanged herself in the closet".

The New York Daily News reports that Ashawnty Davis died on Wednesday after she was hospitalized on life support for two weeks.

The attacks brought on a despair so crushing that her basketball dream - and any other chance of happiness - felt impossible, relatives said. Ashawnty's parents added to KDVR that she endured more bullying after the video surfaced - and that was more than she could bear.

They believe their daughter was a victim of "bullycide", a term used when someone commits suicide because of bullying.

"My child was supposed to be protected at school and for me not to have no protection there it just makes me feel unsafe about my other children and the other children that are there", Ashawnty's mother said. "That was my baby, and I love my baby".

The Cherry Creek School District called Davis' death a "heartbreaking loss" in a statement, according to KDVR.

"We do not tolerate bullying of any kind in our schools and we have a comprehensive bullying prevention programme in place at all of our schools", the statement read. "We took immediate action in response, turning the video over to police and addressing the matter with students".

Parents Anthony Davis and Latoshia Harris say the school didn't do enough to stop the bullying.

Jean Twenge, a psychology professor at San Diego State University, wrote in The Washington Post last week that her research shows teens who spend five or more hours a day online were 71 percent more likely to have a least one suicide risk factor, such as depression or making a suicide plan, than teens who spent only one hour a day online. Maybe teachers are exhausted of being referees and cops when they were hired to teach.
