Facebook Launches Messaging App for Kids

Facebook Down All services including FB messenger down for many users

Instead parent's can have the access to manage the "Messenger Kids" app of their children, from their self Facebook account page, controlling which family members or friends they are able to communicate. Then the device can be handed over to the child so they can start chatting with the family and friends you approve. It launched Monday in the USA, initially on Apple devices.

Facebook rolled out Monday a version of its popular Messenger app for kids under 13.

He added that data from children would not be used for ad profiles and that the application would be compliant with the Children's Online Privacy and Protection Act (COPPA).

"A messenger app for kids under 13 that only parents can sign them up for sounds like a nice idea on its face", said James Steyer, the organisation's chief executive.

However, even as Facebook was rolling out the kiddie chat app, the adult version of Facebook Messenger went down briefly, and as usual users were panicky and took to Twitter to air their grievances.

Messenger Kids is launching in the U.S. from Monday, but a United Kingdom launch date has not been confirmed. Kids don't get a separate Facebook or Messenger account; rather, it's an extension of a parent's account.

Facebook Messenger kids launched is the free app which is aimed at kids under 13, who can't yet have their own accounts under Facebook's rules, though they can use this app to use the facebook account.

British health secretary and Conservative MP Jeremy Hunt has added his voice to the chorus of critics attacking the social network for trying to attract ever-earlier users to its services, publicly telling the company: "Stay away from my kids".

In addition to our research with thousands of parents, we've engaged with over a dozen expert advisors in the areas of child development, online safety and children's media and technology who've helped inform our approach to building our first app for kids.

After that, parents have to provide their kid's name.

Facebook also confirms that it's taking great measures to make sure that the app doesn't come off in any way exploitative.

He was joined in his criticism by leading children's society Barnardo's, which said the firm is targeting kids too young to use social media responsibly.
