The Cleveland Browns close out the home portion of the 2017 National Football League regular season this afternoon when they host the Baltimore Ravens.
The Browns played a game to match the mood of a half-empty stadium, losing 27-10 to the Baltimore Ravens while falling to 0-14 on the season.
Baltimore promptly responded with a 75-yard touchdown drive, a possession that was jump-started by a 30-yard Wallace catch and punctuated by a Flacco touchdown run. With quarterback Aaron Rodgers still not suiting up for the Packers at the time, the Browns may have had their best opportunity for a win yet.
Browns quarterback DeShone Kizer, who achieved the almost-impossible feat of throwing for minus-12 yards in the first quarter, hit Coates on a slant.
The Browns (0-14) went 0-8 at home - 0-7 in Cleveland, 0-1 in London - for the second time and must win at either Chicago or Pittsburgh to avoid joining the 2008 Detroit Lions in the notorious 0-16 club.
Baltimore quarterback Joe Flacco, who struggled in the early part of the season, had his third straight game of more than 265 passing yards and multiple touchdowns. Brandon Williams then fell on the ball for a relatively easy big-man touchdown. A measurement and a challenge - which took a while to request because Jackson could not seem to find his red flag - proved the Browns were short again. The Ravens had a fourth and goal attempt where they got stuffed.
If Flacco keeps this up, teams won't want to play the Ravens in the playoffs.
For the Browns, the most significant injury news is that rookie safety Jabril Peppers is active after missing last week's game with a knee injury.
Later, Kizer forced a throw to the back of the end zone that could have been picked off by three Ravens.
Running back Isaiah Crowell slammed through a hole at left guard for 59 yards on the first play after the turnover on downs.
Marvin Lewis' imminent departure in Cincinnati has added a new wrinkle to Cleveland's cloudy coaching situation. The Browns are 3-10 against the spread this season, Baltimore are 7-5-1. Ravens S Eric Weddle intercepted his sixth pass of 2017 in the first quarter.
If Kizer can show that kind of improvement in his second go at the Ravens, the Browns may have a chance to make a game of it.
