Got the flu? Here's what leads to recovery

Current flu activity across the country

People who suspect they are sick with the flu should stay home and avoid contact with other people as much as possible while resting and staying hydrated, public health officials said. The state continues to offer the flu vaccine at five State Service Centers, which can be found at dhss.delaware.gov/dhss/dph/fluclinics.html.

So far, 512 flu-related hospitalizations have been reported to the CDC this year. "The course of flu is unpredictable in both adults and children and it is hard to identify the stage of transmission with certainty", said Bakht Roshan, MD, Infectious Disease Specialist. The vaccine remains the best way to prevent influenza illness for ourselves, our families, and our patients (subject to availability).

"This increased rate of flu activity is concerning because influenza can be a serious disease for anyone, including children, pregnant women, and previously healthy young adults", said Dr. Burnestine Taylor, ADPH's Medical Officer for Disease Control and Prevention.

North Carolina officials have reported the state's first child death from flu for this season.

Four strains of Influenza are circulating at the present time but most of the attention has only been on the H3N2 predominant strain, representing about 70 percent of the patients.

San Diego physicians are encouraging all residents to get a flu vaccination as a precaution.

Only about 38.6 percent of all people 6 months and older were vaccinated by early November, according to the CDC, but data from previous seasons show that more than half of all children become vaccinated by the end of the season. In lab specimen tests, H3N2 has been responsible for around nine out of every 10 flu cases studied. "It takes approximately two weeks for your body to build immunity once you've received the vaccination".
