Israel remands Palestinian girl filmed slapping soldier in West Bank

Palestinian Ahed Tamimi, 17 a well-known campaigner against Israel's occupation appears at a military court at the Israeli-run Ofer prison in the West Bank village of Betunia on Dec. 20 2017

The arrest came in the wake of an incident, in which Ahed Tamimi, 17, and another teenager were seen on a video footage slapping and kicking two heavily-armed Israeli soldiers in the Palestinian village of Nabi Saleh in the central West Bank.

Members of the Palestinian Tamimi family have a long history of attempting to stage confrontations with IDF soldiers, which they film and photograph to serve as anti-Israel propaganda.

Israelis were furious when a video clip showing two young Palestinians girls physically abusing an IDF soldier went viral over the weekend. However, the servicemen did not oblige the girls, and refrained from retaliating throughout the encounter.

The girls filmed the soldiers with cellphones, which seemed to indicate they were trying to instigate a violent response from the soldiers.

Speaking to the Jerusalem Post, Tamimi's father told the outlet that soldiers had also "beaten his family", in addition to officials arresting the teen and confiscating cell phones, laptops and cameras from the home.

Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman hailed the IDF as the "most humane army that exhibits moral values that do not exist elsewhere". "The investigation reveals that the commander of the force, who was given operational judgment, acted professionally by not getting dragged into violence". Bennett noted that under Israeli law, attacking soldiers is punishable by up to seven years in jail. The soldiers remained in their place initially and did not respond.

Tamimi is well known as a leader of youth protests against Israeli soldiers in the West Bank. Ahed and Nariman managed to pull the soldier of Muhammad and free him.

The video has been used by the Israeli army to prove to the world that their soldiers exercise restraint, but the women's arrest in the middle of the night has been criticized by Palestinian activists.
