'Jerusalem embassy move a sovereign decision'

Indonesia condemns Guatemala for Israeli embassy move

"It's a shameful and illegal act that goes totally against the wishes of church leaders in Jerusalem" and violates a non-binding UN General Assembly resolution condemning the USA move, the ministry said in a statement.

Guatemala's top diplomat defended the country's decision to move its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, rejecting worldwide and domestic scrutiny after following the U.S.' lead.

The Israeli minister noted that the decision taken by Donald Trump would trigger a wave of such moves.

"We see Jesus in the children of the Middle East who continue to suffer because of growing tensions between Israelis and Palestinians", he said in his address, delivered from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica to tens of thousands of people.

Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales announced that he was ordering his country's embassy to move from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, despite a United Nations vote last week condemning US President Donald Trump's decision to unilaterally view the holy city as Israel's capital.

In an interview with Israel Radio, she declined to say which states Israel was speaking with, but Channel 10 reported that the next country likely to announce an embassy move was Honduras.

The announcement made Guatemala the first country to follow the United States in saying it was moving its embassy.

The U.S. was the sole dissenting vote.

Trump didn't set any timetable for moving the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, and neither did Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales.

The resolution passed by the General Assembly declared the US action on Jerusalem "null and void".

A total of 128 nations voted to maintain the global consensus that Jerusalem's status can only be decided through peace negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians.

Erekat told official Palestinian radio station Voice of Palestine that Guatemala's decision is in breach of worldwide law, the UN charter and the 12 UN Security Council resolutions related to Jerusalem.

The high-speed Tel Aviv-Jerusalem railway has been under construction since 2001 and will complement the existing, slower railway that already operates between the two cities.

"It won't happen tomorrow morning".

After this, the United Nations General Assembly had adopted by a decisive vote of 128 to 9, with 35 abstentions, a motion rejecting the USA decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
