New York Islanders moving back to Long Island

Jack Fenty, of Garden City talks with

New York Arena Partners, which includes representatives of the Islanders, Madison Square Garden, and the New York Mets, wants to construct an 18,000-seat arena for the Islanders, who now play at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. That property is primarily a parking lot used on Belmont Stakes day; in the off-season, it houses cars for auto dealerships. The request asked for proposals to transform Belmont into "one of Long Island's premier destinations for entertainment, sports, hospitality and retail".

NYCFC's bid featured "a 26,000-seat open-air stadium in addition to 400,000 square-feet of space for retail, a 5.2-acre community park and a 2-acre soccer facility".

The Isles' development partners are Sterling Project Development, which is run by the Mets' Wilpon family, and Oak View Group, which is partially funded by Madison Square Garden.

Sources confirm the team has won the right to build a new arena at Belmont Park.

If Barclays Center were to opt out in that scenario the Islanders would have until the start of the 2018-19 season to find a new home - something they won't have to worry about anymore.

It's a Christmas miracle for Islanders fan.

Belmont Park is a world-famous horseracing track and now looks like it will expand.

The New York Islanders are coming back to Nassau County.

An effort to get a new arena built, to replace Nassau Coliseum, proved fruitless and fostered a move to a modern arena that had dates to fill. Tavares, 27, the face of the franchise since he was selected first overall in the 2009 draft, could become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

The official announcement is slated for Wednesday at 11pm ET with Governor Andrew Cuomo expected to be on hand for the announcement. The purchase price - much more than the $325 million value of the team estimated by Forbes - was based in part on the team having a home in New York City.

NYCFC have been playing at Yankee Stadium since their 2015 season and have not made any public progress on a soccer specific stadium.
