Sensex rises 100 points, Nifty above 10500, RCom shares gain over 30%

BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty open higher on Thursday

At 2:36 PM, the BSE Sensex was trading at 34,038, up 190 points, while the Nifty50 Index was ruling at 10,523, up 45 points.

While the implementation of the GST caused short-term disruptions, investors feel the government will stay firm on its reforms agenda, backed by the BJP's strong showing in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh assembly elections, brokers said. At the close, the benchmark 30-share index, BSE Sensex lost 63.78 or 0.19% at 33,848.03 with 16 components registering drop.

The Sensex clocked its best performance in recent years, rising by 7,430.37, or 27.91 percent in 2017. It had gained 508.92 points, or 1.94%, last year.

The Nifty has risen 2344.90 points, or 28.65 per cent, during the year. It surpassed its previous closing high of 34,010.61 reached December 26.

The NSE Nifty slid 40.75 points, or 0.39 percent, to 10,490.75 after scaling a new peak of 10,552.40.

Vedanta Ltd rose as much as 2.7 percent, and was on track for a third straight session of gains.

The Sensex and Nifty ended 2017 on a high note post increased buying by participants after the start of January series in the Futures and Options (F&O) segment.

In four days, shares of the company have zoomed 122 percent adding Rs 5,506.76 crore to its market capitalisation.

Reports said that oil, gas, metal and energy didn't perform well- but IT, FMCG, Power, auto, capital goods and healthcare were up as they rose up to 1.63 per cent. Tata Motors, Axis Bank, TCS, Hero MotoCorp, Adani Ports, Wipro, Asian Paints, Maruti and HDFC gained majorly. The Nifty Mid-Cap and Small-Cap index gained 0.06% and 0.49%, respectively.

Trading was thin across global markets on the last session of the year. Reliance Industries, up 0.8 per cent, and Idea Cellular Ltd, up more than 3.5 per cent, extended gains for a second straight session. The CAC 40 of France slipped 0.55%, DAX of Germany lost 0.69%, while FTSE 100 of the United Kingdom closed above the neutral line.
