Singapore Airlines Decides to Reroute Flights as Measure against N. Korea Missiles

Singapore Airlines changed a flight route between South Korea and the U.S. earlier this year over fears about North Korean missile launches in the Asia-Pacific region, it has emerged.

Crew on board a Cathay Pacific plane flying over Japan reported a suspected sighting of last week's North Korean missile test, the airline said.

Fears of a North Korean missile accidentally obliterating a passenger plane during one of Kim Jong Un's unannounced, uncoordinated rocket launches prompted at least one airline to change its flight course this year, a spokesperson told Fox News on Thursday.

Cathay is said to be planning to offer satellite phones to its crew on flights between South Korea and Hong Kong.

"At dawn, North Korea launched an unidentified ballistic missile to the East from the environs of Pyongyang", according to the chiefs of staff of South Korea.

"At the moment, no one is changing any routes or operating parameters". The decision comes after Pyongyang's continuous missile tests in the Sea of Japan disregarding worldwide opposition.

An IATA spokeswoman said by email on Thursday that de Juniac's remarks were in reference to the airline trade group's support of a recent decision by ICAO to "strongly condemn North Korea's continued launching of ballistic missiles over and near worldwide air routes". Cathay Pacific's crew reported seeing the weapon re-enter the Earth's atmosphere, while Korean Air said its pilots "saw a flash". "We remain alert and (will) review the situation as it evolves".

In August, Air France-KLM expanded its no-fly zone around North Korea after a missile test.

Travelers who are concerned should know the chances of an airplane colliding with a missile are extremely low: One safety analyst estimates that it is less than a billion to one.
