Sydney man charged with acting as an agent for North Korea

Chan Han Choi, a 59-year-old naturalised Australian of Korean descent, allegedly tried to broker the sale of missile components, including software for the guidance systems of ballistic missiles, as well as the sale of coal to third parties in Indonesia and Vietnam, police said yesterday.

The AFP will be holding a press conference at 11:00am to discuss the charges.

Police allege he has broken both United Nations and Australian sanctions.

It says this in breach of both United Nations and Australian sanctions.

Authorities allege that Chan attempted to sell missile components, including software for the guidance of ballistic missiles and North Korean military expertise to global parties.

"This man was a loyal agent of North Korea, who believed he was acting to serve some higher patriotic objective".

Australian Federal Police executed a search warrant at the south Sydney home on Saturday after a "very complex" investigation, following a tip-off from an global agency.

The man was arrested and charged in Sydney yesterday and is expected to face Parramatta Bail Court later today.

AFP assistant commissioner Neil Gaughan said his actions were investigated over a period of months. "I think at the end of the day he would sell whatever he could to make money back for the North Korean government", Gaughan told reporters.

These are the first charges ever brought in Australia over the sale of weapons of mass destruction.

"The Australian public should be assured that police have acted to ensure no direct risk to our community". They also claim Chan attempted to broker sales of coal to entities in Vietnam and Indonesia.

"We are alleging that all the activity occurred offshore, and was purely another attempt for this man to trade goods and services as a way to raise revenue for the government of North Korea", he said.

Choi was arrested Saturday and charged over two transactions that were unsuccessful.

If convicted, he could face a maximum of 10 years' imprisonment. He said investigations were continuing and that more charges could be filed against Choi.
