The OnePlus 5T can't stream HD video from Netflix, Amazon Prime, others

The One Plus 5T has a 6-inch 1080p display and a powerful Snapdragon 835 processor paired with at least 6GB of RAM so it is certainly capable of supporting high-definition video streams

According to posts on the OnePlus forum, OnePlus 5T is not able to stream HD standard content (720p) or higher on popular services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and even Google Play Movies. Unfortunately, there are no words on HD streaming capabilities heading for older OnePlus devices or the Axon 7 and M anytime soon. And indeed, HD video streaming is still possible on non-DRM-protected platforms such as YouTube, where some OnePlus 5T owners report that 1080p video playback is available, though only if the option has been manually selected. This issue came to light when a user by the name of whatthefunk pointed it out on an OnePlus Forum.

Netflix makes use of Google's Widevine DRM to play content. OnePlus devices now are certified for the L3 security level - which doesn't allow users to playback content at higher resolutions. "I am massively surprised this has not been brought up in reviews/not had a bigger fuss made about as this is completely unacceptable for a brand that is now well established!" the thread starter writes.

OnePlus says that this is an issue that will be fixed with a software update in the future, but it isn't going into any detail on when that might actually arrive. However, the exact reason for omitting this crucial feature in a phone that gets so much attention wasn't told.

OnePlus 5 and the successor device - OnePlus 5T can't stream content from Netflix, Amazon Prime, Google Play Movies, and other video services in high-definition now, but the company has promised to bring the support to both the phones very soon. With this display, if the consumers can not enjoy HD videos via specific apps, then it will definitely be a disappointment for many.

Considering that the OnePlus 5T is touted to be on par with the current flagships in town, it's a bit perplexing to see that it doesn't support HD streaming.
