Time Names 'The Silence Breakers' Of #MeToo Movement Person Of The Year

The women behind the #MeToo movement have been named Time Person of the Year

Dubbed "the silence breakers" in Time's accompanying feature and the #MeToo movement on its shortlist, the magazine's latest honouree recognizes the women and men who, in increasing numbers and with greater success since a pair of October features in The New York Times and New Yorker laid bare the serial predatory behaviour of iconic film producer Harvey Weinstein, have been stepping forward and sharing their stories of being victims of harassment.

The Time cover features five women, including Fowler, Swift and the actor Ashley Judd, who accused Weinstein of misconduct. Time's decision was revealed on Today.

"Its was especially hard this year, a year of so much disruption in the United States in around the world", said Felsenthal. "But it has actually been simmering for years, decades, centuries", stated the TIME article.

It's a recognition of the cultural reckoning this year and the #MeToo movement, which represents the people, mostly women, who have fueled a worldwide discussion about sexual harassment and assault.

"The President is incorrect about how we choose Person of the Year", a Time spokeswoman told CNN in a statement.

President Donald Trump was runner-up this year, but in 2016 he won the accolade for the "revolution" he stirred in the US.

"The galvanizing actions of the women on our cover ... along with those of hundreds of others, and of many men as well, have unleashed one of the highest-velocity shifts in our culture since the 1960s", Felsenthal said.

Accusations of sexual harassment against O'Reilly cost Fox more than $45 million in claims settlements. His retrial is set for April. The shamed Hollywood movie mogul denies all accusations against him.

The tweets, Instagram and Facebook posts began after actress-activist Alyssa Milano followed on a suggestion from a friend of a friend on Facebook and tweeted: "If you've been sexually harassed or assaulted write "me too" as a reply to this tweet".

On the story's heels, the bricks have tumbled across all industries, those accused of sexual misconduct include media personalities, political figures, artists, and more. Instead, the magazine announced it was honoring the women and men who "span all races, all income classes, all occupations and virtually all corners of the globe" for breaking their silence.

This year's short list was dominated by men, including Chinese president Xi Jinping, special prosecutor Robert Mueller, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, and National Football League player Colin Kaepernick.
