Trump officially endorses Roy Moore, called to offer support

"The president had a positive call with Judge Roy Moore during which they discussed the state of the Alabama Senate race and the president endorsed Judge Moore's campaign", Raj Shah, the principal deputy press secretary, said in a statement.

"(Trump) is making the point that in one of our best opportunities for significant tax relief. we couldn't muster any support from Democrats", he said.

Romney tweeted, "Roy Moore in the US Senate would be a stain on the GOP and on the nation".

"Putting Pelosi/Schumer Liberal Puppet Jones into office in Alabama would hurt our great Republican Agenda of low on taxes, tough on crime, strong on military and borders...& so much more", Trump said in another tweet.

The former Alabama supreme court judge has been accused by seven women of pursuing sexual relationships with them when they were teenagers and he was a 30-something prosecutor.

Trump has dodged backing Moore up until now, leaving fellow Republicans to call out Moore.

While many national Republicans called on Moore to drop out in the immediate wake of the allegations, the calls for him to step aside have quieted in recent days.

Many in the party's Washington leadership worry Moore could taint 2018 Republican candidates, which is one of the reasons they withdrew support from him days after the allegations surfaced. "We are uncomfortable with the explanations that Roy Moore has given to date", White House legislative director Marc Short told ABC News.

Roy Moore holds a campaign rally in Henagar, Alabama, on November 27, 2017.

I'll get this out the way: If you're in Alabama and you want to vote for Roy Moore, vote for Roy Moore.

If Jones defeats Moore next week, Republicans' Senate majority would narrow to just 51-49. It's bad on the border.

Trump fully endorsed on Twitter earlier Monday morning, despite his hesitancy to throw his full support behind the embattled Republican candidate in the wake of explosive accusations against him.

Even before the allegations surfaced, Moore was a controversial far-right candidate.

Jones had a lead of 3 percentage points over Moore among likely voters - within the margin of error - according a poll released December 2 by the Washington Post and the Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University.
