Whistleblower: Flynn texts broached nuclear plan, sanctions

Michael Flynn former national security adviser to President Trump leaves following a plea hearing at the federal court house in Washington D.C. on Dec. 1

The whistleblower told House Democrats that while Trump spoke at his inauguration, Flynn texted from his seat on the Capitol steps to Alex Copson, the managing director of ACU Strategic Partners and the nuclear project's main promoter.

"General Michael Flynn - within minutes of Donald Trump being sworn in as president - was communicating directly with his former business colleagues about their plans to work with Russian Federation to build nuclear reactors in the Middle East", the letter says. If this is true, then we have a crystal-clear example of a high-level Trump administration official easing sanctions on Russian Federation in order to enrich himself.

Mr Cummings said the whistle-blower detailed a business effort that was aimed at boosting investment in the Middle East.

The letter said that if this witness account is accurate, Mr Trump's national security adviser "was trying to manipulate the course of worldwide nuclear policy for the financial gain of his former business partners".

An unnamed colleague of the text message's recipient informed the top Democrat on the House of Representatives' oversight and government reform committee, Elijah Cummings, who published the claims in an open letter yesterday.

During the conversation, Mr. Copson told the whistle-blower that "this is the best day of my life" because it was "the start of something I've been working on for years, and we are good to go". Copson was working with Flynn to promote a joint project with Russian Federation to build nuclear reactors in the Middle East.

Cummings did not name the whistleblower in the letter, but offered to have Gowdy speak with the person directly.

The whistleblower said that Copson quickly displayed what he claimed to be a text message from Flynn that appeared to have been sent during Trump's inauguration speech.

Flynn, who pleaded guilty last week to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, was communicating with former business associates "within minutes" of Trump's inauguration, according to the letter - reassuring them Russian investments would soon be available as the Trump administration lifted sanctions.

"Your letter seems to resort to desperate and baseless jurisdictional excuses to avoid conducting oversight in an apparent attempt to protect President Trump and his Administration", Cummings said while pointing out "inaccuracies" in Gowdy' letter.

Neither Copson nor an attorney for ACU responded to a request for comment. "But the exceptionally troubling allegations in this case - combined with ongoing obstruction from the White House and others - have made this step necessary".

Cumming also noted the congressional probe into Hillary Clinton's role in an Obama-era Uranium One deal that Gowdy is spearheading- a probe that was recently announced after Republicans said they had found a new informant.

"I do not bring this whistle-blower to your attention lightly", Cummings said.

Mr. Gowdy and Mr. Cummings have a long history of clashing publicly over politically charged investigations. The whistleblower saw that the time stamp of the message was 12:11 pm, but did not read the text.
