3.3 million faulty air bags that can explode recalled

The Japanese company Takata is expanding its air bag recall to include another 3.3 million faulty inflators.

The Japanese air bag maker is recalling frontal air bags in certain 2009, 2010 and 2013 cars by at least 15 automakers.

Automakers will provide specific models in paperwork that will be filed later this month with the NHTSA.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and vehicle manufacturers urge the public to get their vehicles fixed as soon as possible; the recall fix is free. That can hurl hot shrapnel into unsuspecting drivers and passengers. Sources have touted this recall for airbag inflators to be the largest in the history of USA automotive industry, which is withdrawing more than 69 million inflators in over 42 million vehicles across the globe. This could include replacing airbags that were previously replaced under earlier Takata recalls, NHTSA says. Older models and those in states with high humidity and temperatures are getting priority. The inflators can explode in a crash and spray passengers with potentially lethal metal shards.

Takata, which declared bankruptcy last summer, first began recalling the airbag devices in 2014.

NHTSA has said the Takata recalls are unprecedented in size and complexity and have resulted in groundbreaking lessons that will help automakers reach their fix goals.

So far, the recalls have effected 19 automakers who have had to recall about 69 million air bag inflators in 42 million vehicles, CBS reported. The agency also has the authority to fine automakers that don't make recall repairs in a timely manner. The NHTSA expects "numerous" vehicle recalls to be announced by the automakers, not Takata.

NHTSA and vehicle manufacturers are urging the public to get their vehicles fixed as soon as possible, saying the recall fix will be free. You can also use their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) tool to see if your vehicle is part of the recall.

18E-001 (2013 Models Only) Vehicles recalled: 1 million 2013 models from these automakers: General Motors, Jaguar Land Rover, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Tesla, and Toyota.
