Australian Open 2018: Will Roger Federer or Marin Cilic win men's singles?

Canada's Gabriela Dabrowski left and Croatia's Mate Pavic hold their trophy aloft after defeating Hungary's Timea Babos and partner India's Rohan Bopanna in the mixed doubles final at the Australian Open tennis championships in Melbo

After 1 hour 2 minutes under the closed roof on Rod Laver Arena, he's on par, 7-7 (but still well below his marks at the other majors: 11-1 at Wimbledon, 7-3 at the U.S. Open, and 5-2 at Roland Garros). "There's always a lot of work that goes into it during the tournament; focus and also preparation beforehand", Federer said ahead of the final, when asked what it would mean to join the likes of Margaret Court (24), Serena Williams (23) and Steffi Graf (22) in the elusive 20s club, via The Herald Sun. "At one point it becomes too much and you just can't take it any more and you realise there's no way you can come back and it's better to stop". "That's why this one feels bittersweet. Please understand. I wish all the best luck for @rogerfederer in the finals".

"He's played such a wonderful tournament, so credit to him for playing so hard again today".

Federer's conversion rate for finals in Australia is much better - the only time he lost a championship match was in 2009 against Rafael Nadal.

Cilic of course awaits Federer in the final on Sunday night in a rematch from London.

Roger Federer says he has nothing to improve in his stellar game as he closes in on a 20th Grand Slam title at the Australian Open.

But it took a toll.

The end came even sooner than expected, though, as Chung took a medical timeout at 4-1 down and then called it quits at 30-30 and 5-2 down in the second set. "It was more for the [spectators] than for me", he joked in his on-court interview after the match.

"I play really good in last two weeks".

"So for me clearly it was all good". Federer has an imposing win-loss record of 93-13 at the Australian Open and overall his Grand Slam record stands at 331-52. But I knew he also had issues going into the match against Novak.

"I'm just happy I'm in the final, to be honest. Over the last few days, it was blister under blister under blister", he said.

"I think I've done everything pretty well".

Stan Wawrinka's win over Nadal in 2014 was the only final since 2008 that didn't feature two of the Big Four. And Murray, a five-time Australian Open runner-up, withdrew from the season-opening major to have surgery on his hip, leaving their collective reputation for dominance in Australia on Federer.

The defending champion outclassed Chung and looked set for a crushing straight-sets victory, but the Next Gen ATP Finals champion decided he was unable to continue when on the brink of going two sets down.

Chung, 21, defeated top-class tennis players to reach semifinals in the Australian Open, becoming the first South Korean player ever to do so.
