CES Tech Conference Hit with Major Power Outage

One convention center employee who asked not to be identified said he has worked at CES for 10 years and had never seen anything like this outage.

THE WORLD'S largest technology show ground to a halt for more than two hours today when a blackout plunged some of its biggest showpieces into darkness, causing evacuations, huge queues, and mass frustration.

Even tech giant Intel joined in on the fun.

North and Central halls of the Las Vegas Convention Center, the official venue for CES, were hit by a major power outage that lasted for nearly two hours on Wednesday, Jan. 10.

On a recent evening in Las Vegas during the CES technology show, robot strippers offered a window into technology's gender fault lines - not to mention our robot future. Thankfully, this is CES, so there are plenty of folks on-hand to document the Central Hall evacuation and the freakish scene inside.

The CES event draws tech companies from all over the world. "We appreciate your patience and apologize for any inconvenience", said the Consumer Technology Association, the group that organizes the show, in a statement to CNN.

The power outage wasn't the only mishap of the week.

A few of the most exciting items Business Insider saw coming out of CES this year included the $4,000 Peloton Tread, a high-end treadmill, Samsung's QLED displays, the Skagen's Falster smartwatch, which runs Android Wear 2.0, and Google's smartwatch operating system. The blackout has impacted the convention center's North Hall, as well, leaving only the South Hall fully operational. The issue has reportedly been resolved and power is expected to be restored to the Central Hall in ~25 minutes.

NV Energy, the region's power supplier, hasn't responded to requests for comments. Security personnel evacuated attendees from the affected areas at the time. Further reports indicate the organizer's of the technological show blamed the outage on a temporary glitch due to the heavy rains in Las Vegas.
