Congress agrees to reopen government with push from unusual bipartisan caucus

Chuck Shumer

The bill passed the Senate on a 81-18 vote, but the real hurdle was the procedural vote earlier in the day requiring at least 60 votes.

During a meeting at the White House on Friday, hours before the government shut down, Schumer offered Trump partial funding for his long-promised wall along the US-Mexico border in exchange for protections for the almost 700,000 unauthorised immigrants shielded from deportation under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, set to expire on March 5. Numerous shutdown's full effects were less visible during the weekend, when much of the federal workforce would typically be off anyway.

A requirement that all USA businesses use a government computer system to verify the immigration status of job applicants. Lawmakers are convening for a Sunday session to try to resolve the government shutdown.

"A border wall is not the answer to the immigration issue, as it adversely impacts border communities and drives migrants to more remote areas of the desert, possibly to their deaths", Mark J. Seitz, bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of El Paso said on Tuesday. I believe that that sets the stage for us to work together. Lindsey Graham of SC told reporters, appearing alongside GOP Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, Sen. "Here's what I predict". "We will make a long-term deal on immigration if, and only if, it is good for our country".

A group of Democrats, some of them 2020 presidential hopefuls, maintained their opposition to the bill.

"The Republican majority now has 17 days to keep the Dreamers from being deported", Schumer said, referring to DACA recipients. They succeeded yesterday in beating back the far left, the progressive wing who were insisting that DACA protection be put above everything else.

GREENE: All right. Speaking about this moment - the government shutdown is over and where Democrats go from here - with Mo Elleithee.

The US government can not fully operate without funding bills that are voted in Congress regularly.

The White House downplayed McConnell's commitment, and said Democrats caved under pressure.

Instead of a wall along the entire span, "we need 700 more miles of barrier", Kelly said - a concession that a physical barrier does not need to stretch the entire length of the border. Jeff Flake were not included and no Democrat senators were invited.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Ky., makes the thumbs up sign as he leaves the Senate floor after reaching an agreement to advance a bill ending the government shutdown, January 22, 2018.

"Nobody knows for sure that the Republicans & Democrats will be able to reach a deal on DACA by February 8, but everyone will be trying", Trump tweeted.

The deal the "centrists" want includes assurances that there would be a separate vote on legislation to grant amnesty to millions of illegal aliens - a proposal that President Trump already said, "was the opposite of what I campaigned on".

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer told fellow Democrats behind closed doors that their position in the minority prevented them from seeking a flawless deal, but expressed satisfaction at the progress made toward bringing significant immigration information to the Senate floor. He called Schumer's withdrawal of the offer "a step backward".

Nationally, DACA provided almost 800,000 young immigrants with a reprieve from deportation and the ability to work legally in the US via renewable work permits.

The aide also noted talks will continue and may yield more progress in the meantime. When the high-stakes game of chicken ended Monday evening, liberal activists were furious, Republicans were giddy, and vulnerable Senate Democrats were quietly relieved. But nothing's in writing, and in the current fractious environment, the agreement may not hold.
