French president warns that United Kingdom can't keep full access to EU

London's Rush Hour Traffic

The interview, broadcast this morning, was recorded earlier this week when Mr Macron came to the UK to meet with Theresa May for the joint UK-France Summit.

While speaking to Marr, Mr Macron let slip the "best way to dismantle the EU" was for Britain to negotiate with countries one-by-one, therefore, refusing to outline a full list of demands.

Mr Macron added: "This decision has an impact for a lot of players".

"As a result of the European Union referendum they will have to choose between the different cities, so there is a competition between the different cities".

Reports say the government of South Africa took their protest to the USA embassy in Pretoria and reacting to Trump's controversial comments that some immigrants from Africa and Haiti come from "shithole" countries, the country's foreign ministry called the remarks "crude and offensive".

"I don't understand why we would have to pay", McDonnell said.

On the issue of the ongoing negotiations for the United Kingdom to leave the EU, he said a bespoke Brexit deal would be possible but only if it were "consistent" with the European Union's single market.

The comments undermine the position of some Brexit supporters who want to regain control of the U.K.'s borders and shun the oversight of European courts while retaining access to the single market. "You can't buy, by definition, full access to the single market if you don't tick the box".

But he warned that Britain would not have full access to the single market without accepting its rules.

"What's important is not to make people think, or believe, that it's possible to have" your cake and eat it, he said, accepting Marr's suggestion for the last five words.

And he also told Mr Marr that it was not too late for the United Kingdom to change its mind about exiting the bloc - describing the 2016 referendum as a "mistake".

He agreed with Marr's comment that "a lot of people in the world think this is just slightly unhinged and very risky", saying that the only way to proceed in this situation was to invite North Korea back to the negotiating table.
