India, Cambodia to boost maritime, defence cooperation

Prime Minister Modi met Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau who's scheduled to visit India next month, after completing his speech at the World Economic Forum.

"It was a very good meeting as India and Cambodia share a special relation which is rooted in history", Sharma told the media after the meeting.

According to the joint statement, both sides expressed a keen interest in enhancing cooperation in maritime domain, including sustainable marine development and protection and preservation of marine and coastal environment, anti-piracy cooperation, "security of sea lanes of communication to maintain peace and ensure safety and security of navigation in the Indo-Pacific Region". The two leaders had discussed the Palestine issue.

Modi said that the number of quick impact projects (QIPs) that India does in Cambodia every year would be increased from five to 10. He said, India is eager to take forward its relationship with Cambodia in the fields of economy, culture, trade and people to people contacts. Mr Modi said, there is a scope of further expanding trade ties between the two nations. He invited Indian businessmen to invest in his country.The visiting dignitary will call on President Ram Nath Kovind and Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu later in the day, besides holding a business meeting.

He said India was the first country to recognise Cambodia's independence in 1953 and independent India's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru was the first global leader to visit that country in 1954.

He will also meet the Indian community in UAE and Oman respectively. The documents were later exchanged in the presence of both the PMs, following the delegation-level talks between the two nations.
