IPhone X production to likely wind down this summer, says analyst

The iPhone X's new design notwithstanding, a new report from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) relays that Apple's flagship iPhone was not the most popular iPhone model during the recent holiday quarter.

In terms of growth, Kuo says that the iPhone will experience growth in the first half of 2018, amounting to up to five percent.

Earlier reports said that the iPhone 8 registered better sales numbers than the iPhone X in 2017. Of course, the star of the show was the device's edge-to-edge OLED display, a design that completely did away with the tried and true home button and replaced it with Face ID.

Kuo has also predicted that Apple will launch three iPhones in 2018 and all will come with full vision display, though the most budget-friendly version will likely have an LCD display.

Other recent iPhone models also performed well in the final quarter, according to CIRP.

And maybe Apple's current naming conventions hold a clue, too. Fairfield Bush & CO. now owns 46,940 shares of the iPhone maker's stock worth $6,743,000 after purchasing an additional 8,300 shares during the last quarter.

Apple's iPhone naming convention is a bit of a mess, and doesn't fit with the rest of its product lineup. That's something we've seen with the iPhone 7, for example, when the iPhone 8 was released. There are reports that the Cupertino-based tech giant will release iPhone X2 in September 2018 along with iPhone 9.

While there were people queuing for days to get their hands on the new iPhone X when it first came out - including this chap, who managed to pull off a spectacular fail - it turns out that sales of Apple's latest handheld communication device have been disappointing.

The company's path forward over the next 2 years could serve to fulfill their vision as expressed during the iPhone X launch: "Our vision has always been to create an iPhone that is entirely screen".

Apple's iPhone X will be the first previous year model that might not be retained in 2018.

Ming-Chi Kuo is right that iPhone X production will shut down, and it'll probably be in the summer. "This feature's only intent is to prevent unexpected shutdowns so that the iPhone can still be used", Apple says in a new support article. The main reason for the move is attributed to the fact that the sales of iPhone X are not as expected by the company. "This confusion, coupled with the high price of iPhone X, is thought to have undercut replacement demand", the report added. That doesn't equate to the phone being discontinued because it's a market failure.
