ISRO successfully launches 100th satellite on board PSLV-C40

After a lull following a rare failure in August 2017, the Indian Space Research Organization (Isro) has a packed schedule this year, with the first launch scheduled for Friday, also taking the 100th indigenous satellite into orbit.

In its 42nd mission, the ISRO's trusted workhorse "PSLV-C40" will carry the weather observation "Cartosat-2" series satellite and 30 co-passengers (together weighing about 613 kg) at lift-off at 9.28 am today.

There are only three Indian satellites among the 31 that ISRO is launching today at 9:29 AM under its first mission in 2018 - the PSLV-C40/Cartosat-2 Series Satellite Mission.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is all set to launch the Cartosat-2 series satellite, with the 28-hour countdown of the rocket having started on Thursday morning.

This will be ISRO's first launch in 2018 and also the first after the unsuccessful mission of IRNSS-1H in August a year ago.

The 28 worldwide customer satellites are being launched as part of the commercial arrangements between Antrix Corporation Limited (Antrix), a Government of India company under Department of Space (DOS), the commercial arm of ISRO and the global customers. Both the micro and nano satellites have been built as co-passenger payloads.

The six strap-on solid rocket boosters - four ignited on the ground and two in the air - will all complete their burns and jettison from the PSLV by T+plus 1 minute, 32 seconds. ISRO had successfully launched Cartosat-2 Series satellite on June 22, 2016.

The four stage PSLV-C40 stands 44.4 metres tall and weighs about 320 tonne at the lift off stage. The images will be used for cartographic applications, urban and rural applications, coastal land use and regulation, road network monitoring, water distribution, creation of land use maps among other things.
