Megyn Kelly fires back at 'Hanoi Jane' Fonda over plastic-surgery feud

How "inappropriate" is it to ask about plastic surgery when you're talking to a woman who was promoting a film about aging?

Over the weekend, Fonda said she would return to Kelly's show.

As Kelly explains in this segment, Fonda appeared on her show back in September to promote a film. "Even she had to apologize years later for that gun picture - but not for the rest of it".

On Monday, Kelly described that interview as one in which she gave Fonda the chance "to empower other women" on the subject of plastic surgery, "and she rejected it".

Fonda, who has been open about her beauty treatments in the past, later admitted she was taken aback by Megyn's "weird" line of questioning, insisting it was just "the wrong time and place". "After all, this is a woman whose name is synonymous with outrage", showing images from Fonda's "Hanoi Jane" Vietnam trip of 1972. "Fonda was on [my show] to promote a film about aging [Our Souls at Night]". "But if she comes around and learns her stuff, sure", she said in answer to a question about going back on the NBC morning show.

The atmosphere is so bad around Megyn Kelly at "Today" that producers of the 7-to-9a.m. slot, hosted by Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb, are openly sniping at her.

"You've been an example to everyone in how to age beautifully and with strength and unapologetically", Kelly said to Fonda at the time.

A perturbed Fonda non-responded, "We really want to talk about that now?"

But Kelly on Monday not only defended her interview with Fonda, but questioned the actress' patriotism. "When she first complained publicly after the program, and repeatedly, I chose to say nothing, as my general philosophy is what other people think of me is none of my business", said Kelly in a three-minute segment.

"[Fonda] has discussed her cosmetic surgery pretty much everywhere before coming on our show". Well, the truth is most older women look nothing like Fonda. Apparently when she came here, however ...

Fonda has yet to respond to Kelly's daring criticism, but she previously issued a public apology for her extreme actions during the Vietnam War, having sparked outrage among her fellow Americans for posing on a missile launcher aimed at USA soldiers in Hanoi back in 1972.

"By the way, she still says she is not proud of America".

In another eyebrow-raising segue, Kelly told viewers that because of Vietnam, Fonda's plastic surgery question "moral indignation is a little much". She put her plastic surgery out there.

Kelly went on to insist she simply wanted to have an "honest discussion" with the star about ageing gracefully, and she has "no regrets" about broaching the topic live on air.
