Mike Vrabel has 'inside track' to become next Titans HC

The 42-year-old has spent the last four seasons with the Houston Texans, the first three as the linebackers coach and the last as the defensive coordinator.

A link has been posted to your Facebook feed.

Tennessee Titans head coach Jeff Fisher, right, argues with a referee during the game against New England Patriots late in the fourth quarter of the AFC Divisional Playoff game in Foxborough, Mass., on January 10, 2004.

That's how a coordinator from a 4-12 team wound up as the Titans' head coach just weeks after the season ended.

Tennessee Titans officials announced they have conducted their first two interviews for a head coach candidate.

Vrabel replaces Mike Mularkey, who was sacked Monday after guiding the franchise to a 21-22 record, including two consecutive winning seasons, its first playoff appearance in nine years and first postseason victory in 14 years.

Mike Vrabel has 'inside track' to become next Titans HC

Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk says in a statement it was easy to see Vrabel's commanding presence and relationship with general manager Jon Robinson.

After weather delayed their original plans to start their head coach interviews Wednesday, the Titans got them underway Thursday. He was successful linebacker for the New England Patriots from 2001-2008.

"He was the ultimate team-first player, and he embodies that same mindset as a coach", Robinson said. Folks rave about his leadership, ability to relate to players and intelligence. I've known him my entire college career and he definitely has a high football IQ. Among the stops he coached at includes multiple teams led by current UCLA head coach Chip Kelly.

Houston suffered a multitude of key injuries on defense this season, including losing J.J.Watt to a season-ending leg injury and finished dead last in scoring defense as a result. Of course, how Vrabel fairs as a head coach in the National Football League with so little coaching experience is anybody's guess.

The North Korean delegation will also include 24 coaches and officials, plus 21 media representatives at the February 9-25 Winter Games. He worked under Urban Meyer at Ohio State (his alma mater) from 2011 through 2013 as both the linebackers and defensive line coach with Ohio State before jumping to the NFL.

While previous head coach Mike Mularkey was a great leader, he often struggled with the latter half of that description.
