Patriots Defensive Coordinator Matt Patricia 'Likely' To Be Named Lions Next Coach

Detroit Lions

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Patricia is "likely to become" the Lions' next head coach. New England advanced to the AFC championship game next weekend with a victory Saturday night over Tennessee.

Well, it starts with his long-standing relationship with Lions general manager Bob Quinn.

During Sunday morning's conference call, Belichick did not address Schefter's report but explained his thought process behind hiring new assistants, one that does not alter much from his usual approach.

Meanwhile Josh McDaniels appears in line to take the head coaching vacancy with the Indianapolis Colts.

Patricia has been a member of New England's staff since 2004, starting out as an offensive assistant, oddly enough. Defensively, though, there have been a lot of questions in the Motor City for quite some time and Patricia would theoretically address those needs with a high-level analytical mind.

A native of Sherrill, N.Y., Patricia was an offensive lineman at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. He began his coaching career there as well, before making stops at Amherst College and Syracuse.

"I think that the one thing that everybody needs to understand about Matt Patricia is that he is a rocket scientist", former Patriots linebacker Dane Fletcher said. "That guy is very good with numbers and he's very good with angles and what not, and he's very intelligent and expects a lot".

Last season, Patricia interviewed for head coaching jobs with the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers, but lost out to Sean McVay and Anthony Lynn, respectively.

So why did Patricia take two years off from coaching? The Lions went 9-7 each of the last two years and made the playoffs twice under Caldwell.

Come fall, Matt Patricia, with pencil tucked firmly behind his ear, is likely going to be patrolling some National Football League sideline as a head coach.
