Svitolina wins Brisbane; Kyrgios beats Dimitrov in semis

Kyrgios wrapped up the first set in 37 minutes despite having to save five break-points

Nick Kyrgios will play Ryan Harrison in the Brisbane International final.

The Canberran pounced on his first break point opportunities in a game in which he cracked two forehand passes beyond Harrison, ranked No.47, and forced a volley error.

"I've got fond memories of Brisbane, played Davis Cup here and had a massive win over the US", Kyrgios said. And as he has done all week, he started slowly against defending champion Dimitrov , losing the first set to a single break of serve.

"Right now, I feel pretty good".

Having defied pain in his left knee to secure his fourth title and first since October 2016, Kyrgios will be fancied by many to pose a threat at the upcoming Australian Open providing he can stay fit.

The Australian's world ranking will improve to 18 after reaching the Brisbane final and will climb to 17 if he claims the title. The men's field at the first grand slam of the year has already been hit by the withdrawals of five-times runnerup Andy Murray and Japan's former US Open finalist Kei Nishikori. "I love playing in front of you guys (Brisbane spectators) even though sometimes it might not seem like I do", said Kyrgios, who said he liked the idea of being on the Brisbane champions list with Lleyton Hewitt, the 2014 victor. The tournament begins in Melbourne on January 15 "It's a good feeling". "There was pressure on me today because I was the favorite and most people expected me to win, so I was proud of the way I handled that expectation and pressure".

Third-seeded Svitolina beat Belarusian qualifier Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-2, 6-1 in a lopsided night final to win her 10th title on the women's elite tour.

Casting aside any concerns over injury following his Brisbane International crown, Kyrgios reaffirmed his commitment to Australia's campaign opener on the same court in less than a month.

A week later Harrison and Kokkinakis had to be separated by officials during a fiery match, with Harrison reportedly saying "Wawrinka should've decked Kyrgios and I should deck that kid". "It's good to see the work I was doing in the offseason is paying off".
