Haas grabs two-stroke lead in Phoenix

Like Fowler, DeChambeau carded a second straight 66, making five birdies on the back nine, including two to finish his round.

Rickie Fowler is tied for the lead with fellow American Bryson DeChambeau at the Pheonix Open.

"I know I can win here".

Late finisher Bill Haas has snatched a two-shot lead on day one at the PGA Tour's Waste Management Phoenix Open ahead of a six-man group that includes two time runner-up in Phoenix, Rickie Fowler, while World No. 2 Jon Rahm lurks three behind.

Daniel Berger and former Arizona State player Chez Reavie were a stroke back.

Scott Stallings carded a 65 to join a trio on 134 that also included Chesson Hadley and Chris Kirk, who both carded 68.

Two-time defending champ and World No. 5 Hideki Matsuyama withdrew prior to the second round of the Waste Management Phoenix Open citing a left-wrist injury.

"Naw, just the same", Matsuyama said. I did some treatment last night, but the pain was still there this morning when I practiced.

"Two birdie holes and to play those three-over today is definitely disappointing, but the fact that I did that and I'm still more than right there in a great position is definitely a positive note that I can leave today with", he said after shooting a 68.

Spieth struggled to get any putts to drop as he posted rounds of one-over 72 and one-under 70 to lie one shot outside the projected cut line. The 24-year-old's last missed a cut was at May's Byron Nelson, a run of 259 days and 15 straight cuts made.

Two years ago, Fowler blew a two-shot advantage on the 17th, before losing in the play-off to Hideki Matsuyama, while he finished fourth in the tournament last season. But he couldn't birdie the insane 16th, then dropped a shot after missing the green with his chip shot on the drivable 17th.

"I still made some good swings", Fowler said of his inward run.
