Killed, Dozens Injured in Hong Kong Bus Crash

At least 19 people have been killed and 47 injured after a double-decker bus overturned in Hong Kong, while 27 people died when a tourist bus plunged from a hill in Indonesia.

The cause of the fatal accident remains unclear.

Photos and videos published by local media or posted on social media showed the bus lying on its side while emergency workers treat injured passengers.

Most of the passengers were horse racing fans, as the bus was travelling on a special route for horse racing days.

Police said they are investigating and arrested the driver on risky driving charges.

"And then it was like the tyre slipped, and the bus turned". 66 injured people were sent to hospitals for treatment, and one man died afterwards.

Killed, Dozens Injured in Hong Kong Bus Crash

Multiple passengers interviewed by the TVB and Cable TV news channels said the bus was speeding.

A press release from Hong Kong authorities today revealed that 18 perished at the scene of the accident.

Lawmaker Lam Cheuk-ting of the Democratic Party urged the government to rethink the design of double-decker buses saying the upper decks had been "repeatedly torn off in accidents, posing a serious threat to passengers on the upper level". He also called for action on the issue of Hong Kong drivers working too many hours.

HKSAR Chief Executive Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor will visit the injured in Prince of Wales Hospital.

Fourteen people were injured last April when a double-decker tram tipped over, with a 23-year-old driver later arrested for risky driving causing harm to others.

The accident happened in a rural area in Hong Kong's New Territories, near the town of Tai Po.
