Millennium man Gerard makes history with Olympic first

Teenager Red Gerard pulled off a shock win in the men's slopestyle snowboarding to claim the first gold medal for Team USA at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics. Gerard's score of 87.16 is what won him the gold, and it came after a shaky run in the first heat with some sketchy landings.

Slopestyle snowboarder Red Gerard poses with fans after the first of his second qualifying run at the PyeongChang Olympics on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018.

"He was like, 'What were you thinking during all those spins?' And I was like, 'I just want to land a run, that's about it, '" Gerard said.

In a later news conference, Gerard said he was already looking forward and would be taking a break from competition after the Olympics to make snowboarding films.

Slopestyle was one of the events that did not fall victim to high winds on Sunday, when the showpiece men's downhill skiing was aborted until Thursday following a pre-dawn meeting of ski chiefs.

"I'm on a cloud", Parrot told reporters at the Phoenix Snow Park. McMorris previously also won bronze in Sochi, also in slopestyle, while competing with a broken rib.

As my Pyeongchang 2018 daily columns begin, youll notice a few tweaks from my columns during previous Olympic Games. And it cemented itself on Sunday as he waited for four of the sport's most dominant riders to take their final runs. I'm shaking right now, maybe from the cold or the excitement, I don't know.

Regina's Mark McMorris held first place until Parrot surpassed him.

"Whatever the outcome was today, just me being pumped on being able to ride a snowboard".

According to The Denver Post, Gerard showed up in South Korea like "an accidental tourist", insisting that "I honestly don't know what the Olympics is".

It's the second Olympic bronze for McMorris, who is coming back from life-threatening injuries suffered in a backcountry crash less than a year ago. The Silverthorne, Colo. resident put down one of the most hard and creative runs of the qualifying heats to punch a ticket to the finals on February 11. "I can not believe what just happened. That was enough for me just to land a run, so to get first is insane".

It was a disappointing day for Norway, who had three riders in the competition.

"I think a unified one is stronger than two divided ones". One viewer wrote, "Wow watching Red Gerard go from 11th place to winning the gold gave me chills!"
