Sky Wins More for Less at Premier League Sale in Buyers' Boon

Stoke 1-1 Brighton Stoke 1-1 Brighton

Both BT and Sky UK (Sky Broadband) will continue to spend big on their respective UK Pay TV platforms after tonight reaching a £4.464bn deal, which will allow them to show Premier League Football matches for a further 3 years from the 2019/20 season onwards. Its four packs of rights total 128 games a season, up from 126 matches now.

Despite the fall in the overall take for the Premier League, BT Sport will pay more to broadcast each match under its new agreement.

However, the league claims there are "multiple bidders" interested in the two remaining "simulcast" packages. It contains Bank Holiday and three midweek fixtures.

Sky and BT could end up paying hundreds of millions of pounds less than the record £5.136bn for the rights they paid in the 2015 auction. League executives are confident of matching or beating the previous 2015-2019 TV rights deal of £5 billion.

Sky paid more last time to preserve its dominant payTV position in the United Kingdom against the serious competition of BT, which was bidding to establish its own subscription television service, to also support its commercial broadband ambitions.

Sky, the Premier League's main broadcast partner since the competition was established in 1992, will broadcast 128 out of 200 available games, including all fixtures on Fridays, Sundays and Mondays.

Premier League soccer has always been key to attract and retain TV and broadband subscribers and the cost of the United Kingdom rights has surged 30-fold over the past 25 years.

BT has, however, said it "will continue to engage" with the Premier League regarding those packages.

A further two packages are still up for grabs, with bidding set to continue when the auction restarts on Thursday, but the cost-per-game price has fallen to £9.3 million, down from the current £10.2 million.

Sky Sports will remain the dominant broadcaster for the Premier League until at least May 2022.

Stephen van Rooyen, Sky's United Kingdom chief exec, said: "We continue to invest in content that our customers value and which complements our strategy to broaden our offer".

"To have achieved this investment with two packages of live rights remaining to sell is an outcome that is testament to the excellent football competition delivered by the clubs", Scudamore said.

Furthermore, Sky has bought the eight games in the new 7.45pm slot on Saturday evenings, as well as getting 24 games it can show either on Friday or Monday evenings and 32 games at 2pm on Sundays.
