Tiger Woods misses cut at Riviera after eight bogeys

'I made really silly bogeys out there, in particular number seven, Woods said.

"I missed every tee shot left and I did not putt well. and consequently never made a run", Woods said.

Woods had three straight bogeys early on the back nine Friday and didn't play almost well enough to make up for it.

Woods hit eight bogeys and three birdies to leave him on six over - four shots off the projected cut. All three opened with birdies at the 10th.

That's as good a par as you'll see on that hole and another highlight for Cantlay, who is looking for his second PGA Tour victory after winning the Shriners Hospitals For Children Open back in November.

McDowell sits joint-top alongside Sam Saunders and Patrick Cantlay at seven-under par after managing seven birdies and back-to-back bogeys at 13 and 14, while Rory McIlroy lags five shots behind following a second round of 69. He launched a string of three straight birdies with a near hole-in-one at the par-three sixth, his 15th of the day.

Lahiri, who shot one-over in the opening round, was even par through 15 holes, when darkness stopped play at the Riviera.

Former US Open victor McDowell has just one top-10 finish worldwide in the past 18 months.

Woods waited until the final day to commit to the Honda Classic. He says he just needs more time. "One of my hallmarks of my whole career is I've always hit the ball pin high with my iron shots, and I have not done that". "I'm really excited to be going into the weekend of the tournament on the business end of things".

His affection for the course isn't clouded by the fact that in two prior appearances at the Genesis Open, in 2012 and 2013, he missed the cut.

This week the missed fairways were joined by plenty of missed greens and, on Friday, missed putts.

But in the bigger picture, the most promising news on Friday relating to this rendition of the Tiger Woods comeback trail is that he feels good enough to play two consecutive weeks.

Fifteen players were unable to finish all 18 holes, including the 30-year-old Saunders.

"My wedge game is fine", he said. "I like my game plan; I've just got to keep executing". "The greens were fast and bumpy, and I knew that", Woods said. Just as his second round was starting, the Honda Classic announced he would be playing next week at PGA National in Florida.

"I am progressing, I'm starting to get a feel for tournament golf again".

With well-hydrated fans still screaming his name from various corners of the Riviera Country Club clubhouse, McIlroy told reporters that the buzzing galleries ultimately have a negative impact on Woods' score.

Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk is expected to appoint Woods and Steve Stricker as vice captains Tuesday during the Honda Classic.

After a birdie at the par-4 third and a bogey at the par-4 fifth, he still sat at even par for the round, and nearly got it to two under on his very next shot at the par-3 sixth, just missing a hole-in-one.

"He's very close. He is very close", McIlroy said a second time for emphasis.
