Watch Falcon 9 Blast Off From Vandenberg

Astronaut Tim Peake

SpaceX had no plans to return the rocket first stage to Earth (which also launched a Spanish Earth observation satellite) as it had already flown once before and was an early version of the Falcon 9 rocket.

The next Falcon 9 rocket launch from Vandenberg will send another 10 Iridium Next satellites to space, the first set since January 2017. He added that the two satellites will start beaming Internet in less than 22 hours near LA. The first serious details of the proposed system emerged via an application to the Federal Communications Commission later the same year.

The test consists of a full simulation of blast off - without the payload - and sees all engines fired for around 3.5 to 7 seconds.

"If anyone is curious, the name was inspired by The Fault in Our Stars", Musk said, referring to the John Green novel and romantic drama movie released in 2014.

Besides the Paz satellite, the rocket carried two prototype satellites, dubbed Tintin A and Tintin B.

Almost three years after the announcement, and following the successful launch of the Falcon Heavy, the first satellites for the high-speed Internet network are now ready for launch.

That's almost 12,000 satellites - more than twice the number of all satellites launched in history, according to a count by the Union of Concerned Scientists.

The rockets initial launch was scheduled for February 17 but was delayed twice to "perform final checkouts", SpaceX tweeted.

A December launch of a Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg created an evening visual spectacle over Southern California, with thousands of people snapping photos of the light show and posting them online, with some even suggesting it was an alien invasion.

SpaceX continued: "Payload and vehicle remain healthy".

The weather forecast appears to be cooperating for the 12:35 a.m. Sunday mission from Launch Complex 40 - it's 80 percent "Go" conditions, according to forecasters with the Air Force's 45th Weather Squadron, Florida Today reports. Musk yesterday took it to Twitter to announce the delay. "Postponing launch to tomorrow, assuming winds are better then".

While that was the main payload, SpaceX was also using the mission to deploy its own satellites.

The primary mission is to deliver a satellite, called PAZ, for the Spanish government. Its goal s to generate high-resolution images of the Earth's surface, regardless of whether there are clouds covering the ground.
