Bears CB Kyle Fuller off the market for Raiders

Bears not expected to franchise tag CB Kyle Fuller

They placed the rarely used transition tag on Fuller only hours before the Tuesday deadline, rather than using the more expensive franchise tag or letting one of their most valuable defensive players leave as an unrestricted free agent. Meaning the Raiders will have to look elsewhere to upgrade their beleaguered secondary this offseason. Under the transition tag, the Bears will get the right of first refusal if another team offers Fuller a contract, but they won't receive compensation if they choose not to match.

Fuller had a stellar start to his career in 2014, with three interceptions and four pass breakups in his first three games, but he disappointed after that, battling injuries the next two years before a resurgent 2017 season, when he had 69 tackles, two interceptions and 22 pass breakups.

Dickerson covers the Chicago Bears for ESPN's NFL Nation. With plenty of money to spend - the Bears have the fourth-highest amount of cap space heading into 2018, per - the Bears have the resources that would seemingly dissuade teams from trying to construct an aggressive, exotic offer. After a resurgent 2017 season, Fuller is expected to draw significant interest on the free-agent market as one of the top available cornerbacks.

Instead of the average of the top five salaries at the cornerback position that the franchise tag pulls, Fuller will be paid the average of the top 10 cornerback salaries in the league.

It saved his tenure with the Bears, and they want to see who the real Fuller is.

The only other corners on the current roster are Marcus Cooper and Cre'Von LeBlanc. Fuller then seemingly had a falling-out with the Bears, who declined his fifth-year option.

Why did the Bears give Fuller the transition tag?

Although Amukamara has been a solid starter for the past six seasons, Fuller clearly was the better player in 2017.
