Germany made to work hard, rallies to hold Spain

Spain draw shows Loew areas for Germany improvement

Thomas Muller cancelled out an early effort from Rodrigo as Germany came from behind to draw 1-1 with Spain in Friday night's worldwide friendly in Dusseldorf.

Isco should have finished off another brilliant Spain move but failed to prod home Jordi Alba's cross, while at the other end De Gea made another top-class save to deny substitute Gundogan when Germany countered at speed. "We have a good feeling after this game against the best team in the world", said Lopetegui, whose own unbeaten run with Spain is now 17 games.

"We can learn a lot from tonight, that's why we wanted to play against teams like Spain and Brazil". Despite the game ending in a stalemate, there were plenty of positives for the coaches involved, and Germany and Spain will now focus on their friendlies against Brazil and Argentina respectively next week.

"Spain and us tried to increase the pressure, attack early, press early".

The five-time world champions showed no signs of missing the injured Neymar at Moscow's Luzhniki stadium, where the July 15 World Cup final will be played.

That was just the start Spain would have been hoping for, but Germany - also unbeaten since the European Championships in a run of 21 matches - rallied and went close through Jonas Hector and Timo Werner before Muller drew them level 10 minutes before the break with a stunning strike.

Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos said: "Spain were on top for the first 20 minutes and deserved to be ahead".

"All in all, it's a fair result, it was a good game and a good test for us".

The four-time World champions threatened once again to going in front with a header from Mats Hummels that hit the top of the crossbar.

"We're at a good level, but we can still play better, especially in defence where we allowed the Spanish too much room".

Spain coach Julen Lopetegui included three veterans who won the 2010 World Cup in Gerard Pique, Sergio Ramos and Andres Iniesta.

"To come to Germany and dominate for 90 minutes is hard, but the team have had personality, ambition and we've played our trump cards trying to win the game, as always at any ground and against any opponent".

"I see this match very positively", said the Spaniard, who praised midfielders Thiago Alcantara and Isco for the problems they caused.

"There are things to improve, but we know how good Germany are", he explained.

"The score is fair, we cannot claim to have dominated for 90 minutes against the Germans, but we tried to play all our cards and we tried to win the match".
