Gov. Ducey to Uber: Arizona suspending license to drive autonomous cars

The future they want

Prior to the crash, Arizona had boasted about its lax regulations of self-driving vehicles.

The Arizona Department of Transportation - which operates the ports of entry used by the self-driving trucks in Topock and Sanders - deferred questions to Uber for information regarding its self-driving truck program.

But in Uber's case the auto failed to spot a woman crossing the road at night and fatally wounded her.

Uber is collaborating with police to investigate how the incident could have happened.

Smith said the video may not show the complete picture, but "this is strongly suggestive of multiple failures of Uber and its system, its automated system, and its safety driver".

Experience forms one pillar of self-driving auto safety, Shashua said, and transparency forms another. Most companies continued driving elsewhere.

Shashua expressed concern about "new entrants" discounting established computer vision experts and attempting to create detection systems that haven't been put through years of testing.

The chief executive officer of Israel's Mobileye, which was acquired by Intel Corp. a year ago for a whopping $15.3 billion, is calling on automakers, regulators and technology entrepreneurs to put their heads together to set out a safety framework for fully autonomous cars.

"It is the high-accuracy sensing systems inside ADAS that are saving lives today, proven over billions of miles driven".

So far, Uber hasn't directly commented on Intel's post.

Since the fatal accident, Uber has temporarily halted its self-driving auto operations in other cities where operates such as Toronto, Pittsburgh San Francisco and Phoenix.

"I found the video the be disturbing and alarming, and it raises many questions about the ability of Uber to continue testing in Arizona", wrote Gov. Ducey, in reference to a video Tempe Police released last week, showing the moments, inside and outside of the self-driving vehicle, leading up to the deadly crash.

A woman has been killed in Arizona overnight, after being struck by a self-driving Uber prototype operating in autonomous mode.

"We proactively suspended our self-driving operations, including in California, immediately following the Tempe incident", Uber spokesperson Sarah Abboud said in a statement.

Doug Ducey has suspended Uber (uber) from testing its self-driving cars in Arizona following a fatal accident in the Phoenix suburb of Tempe earlier this month.

While more accidents are likely the worry has to be that if there are too many, might the public begin to turn against this technology?
