India grounds Pratt-powered A320neos

India aviation regulator orders grounding of 11 jets fitted with Pratt & Whitney engines

DGCA said it had also asked the airlines not to replace the engines.

The move immediately grounded eight aircraft at IndiGo, India's largest carrier, and three at GoAirlines India Pvt.

Pratt & Whitney said it's working closely with customers to minimize disruption and has begun to deliver engines with an "upgraded configuration", Bloomberg said.

"GoAir has received the directive from the DGCA for immediate grounding of all late serial number PW GTF engines. Both IndiGo and GoAir have been told not to refit these engines, which are spare with them in their inventory", DGCA said.

Sources said the grounding of A320 neo aircraft will have an impact on the flight operations of IndiGo and GoAir. "We are in receipt of the communication from the DGCA and we shall comply promptly with the directions of the DGCA". It comes after three in-service shutdowns of aircraft with one PW1100 engine featuring the seal, two of which occurred in the past week, according to the DGCA. Officials went into a huddle soon after and emerged with the directive to ground these A320neo planes.

The decision to ground the 11 planes, fitted with a certain series of Pratt & Whitney engines, was taken after 186 passengers on an IndiGo flight from Ahmedabad to Calcutta via Lucknow had a mid-air scare when one of the engines failed.

Soon after the incident, civil aviation secretary R.N. Choubey said an "appropriate decision" would be taken later in the evening.

European safety regulator EASA had in February this year released emergency airworthiness directive for A320 neo planes fitted with PW1100 engines having a particular serial number.

DGCA said it has not got a "firm commitment" from the U.S. engine manufacturer on addressing fresh safety concerns, which forced it to ground the fleet.

There are around 45 A320 neos, powered by P&W engines, in the country.
